ECU Tigers get down to grid business soon

Less will have to translate into more for the East Central football team during an abbreviated preseason camp that begins Thursday morning.

Under NCAA rules, teams in Division II can’t practice for more than 21 days before their first game, unless school is in session.  Because ECU begins classes later than usual (on Aug. 20) and the Tigers open their 2012 campaign earlier (on Thursday, Aug. 30) than at any time in head coach Tim McCarty’s six seasons at the school, every minute of practice time will be precious.

“As a coach, you have to look at what you’re trying to get done and how you feel you can get that done in the time allotted so the players can execute that plan,” McCarty said.  “It’s all about how we can best get our kids to understand our packages and what we do. We have to make sure we know exactly what we’re doing so we can play assignment football against a pretty tough opponent.”

Because of expected triple-digit temperatures, McCarty said the Tigers will begin practice at 9 a.m. through Monday, then will alternate two-a-days and single practices through the first day of school.  

“We’ll go with our heat schedule for awhile,” he explained.  “There are several reasons for it.  One, obviously, is safety, but you also want to get stuff done and you don’t want people worrying about how hot it is.”
