Lady Tigers fall in San Antonio

 SAN ANTONIO, Texas – —  

East Central University’s Lindsay McCown fired in 28 points and pulled down nine rebounds, but it wasn’t enough as host St. Mary’s (Texas) held on for a 68-61 victory over the Lady Tigers Monday night at Bill Greehey Arena.

McCown, a 6-foot junior forward, came one rebound away from her second straight double-double on Monday after collecting 22 points and 12 boards in ECU’s 88-59 home victory over Mid-America Christian on Saturday.

However on Monday, only one other Lady Tiger — junior guard Jourdan Clark — reached double figures with 10 to go with four rebounds, three assists and one steal. The next high for ECU was freshman Erin Walling with six points on a pair of 3-pointers.

McCown finished the night by converting 11-of-18 field-goal tries and 6-of-9 free throws. Eight of her nine rebounds came off the defensive glass.

St. Mary’s placed four players in double figures, owned a 41-32 rebounding advantage (including 17 offensive boards) and had five less turnovers than ECU (11-16).

Morgan Pullins paced the Rattlers with 22 points and 16 rebounds. Felicia Jacobs tossed in 11 points while Chesney Neely and Jackie Edwards supplied 10 apiece for St. Mary’s, which improved to 2-9 on the season.

The two teams had nearly identical shooting percentages – the Lady Tigers at 40.4 and the Rattlers at 40.9. However, the hosts had six more field goals.

For the second straight game ECU did have a solid effort from the charity stripe for the second straight game, connecting on 12-of-17 attempts (70.6 percent).

The Lady Tigers also stayed in contention with the help of 46.7 percent shooting (7-of-15) from 3-point land.

St. Mary’s had a 35-24 advantage at halftime after shooting at a 44.1 percent pace in the opening 20 minutes.

The Rattlers built up a 16-point advantage, 48-32, with just over 11 minutes to go.

ECU did pull within seven three times in the final 2:13 but could get no closer. The first came off a Kodi Morrison jumper in the paint, a Clark 3-pointer with 36 seconds to go and McCown’s short-range shot with 16 seconds remaining to close out the scoring.

The Lady Tigers, 1-7 on the season, are now idle until after Christmas as they host Cameron University on Saturday, Dec. 31st, at 2 p.m. at the Kerr Center in Ada.
