ECU men’s golf team finishes fourth at GAC Championships
HOT SPRINGS, Ark. — Senior Jeff Weisheit finished fourth and senior teammate Bryeson Lance tied for seventh as the East Central University men’s golf team placed fourth at the first-ever Great American Conference Golf Championships Tuesday at the par-72 Hot Springs Country Club.
Weisheit, after firing a 2-under 70 in Sunday’s opening round for the individual lead, followed that up with back-to-back scores of 77 on Monday and Tuesday to finish at 8-over for the three-day, three-round tournament. Weisheit birdied 10 holes and achieved par on 30 holes during the three-day, three-round event.
Lance, after firing a 1-over 73 on Sunday, posted a 79 on Monday and a 75 on Tuesday to finish at 11-over for the tournament. He had reached a tournament-best par on 36 holes .
ECU’s Dakota Robbins, on the strength of seven birdies in the event, placed 23rd after registering rounds of 79-80-74 to go 17-over for the three rounds. Teammate Brandon Herbison, who also birdied seven holes, posted scores of 80-77-78 to finish 26th and go 19-over.
Travis Arnold, also of the Tigers, tied for 32nd place after putting up scores of 82-81-77 for the three rounds. He finished with eight birdies and went 24-over for the tournament.
The individual champion was Henderson State’s Matt Jennings, who won in a playoff over Arkansas Tech’s Jack Garrett. Jennings’ three-round totals were 73-69-77 while Garrett posted a 73-72-74.
Southwestern Oklahoma State captured the team title with a score of 898, followed by Arkansas Tech (903), Henderson State (914), ECU (918), Harding (919), Southeastern Oklahoma State (928), Southern Arkansas (941), Arkansas-Monticello (963) and Ouachita Baptist (978).
Lady Tiger golfers finish fifth in GAC Championships
HOT SPRINGS, Ark. — The East Central University women’s golf team, despite posting its best team round of the tournament, settled for fifth place as the first-ever Great American Conference Golf Championships wrapped up Tuesday at the par-72 Hot Springs Country Club.
Harding captured the team title of the three-round event with a score of 956, followed by Arkansas Tech (967), Southwestern Oklahoma State (991), Henderson State (999), ECU (1,022), Ouachita Baptist (1,148), Arkansas-Monticello (1,233) and Southern Arkansas (1,261).
The Lady Tigers’ best finish came from Emily Wharton, who tied for 11th place after three-round scores of 85-80-82. Teammate Lindsey Lunceford tied for 14th place after registering scores of 87-83-79.
Wharton recorded three birdies in the three-round event while Lunceford reached par on 24 holes during that span.
Also for ECU, Ashley Cardwell tied for 22nd place after posting rounds of 87-86-87. Shay Shaw finished 25th after a 91-92-83 and Tess Bullard was 27th after a 92-97-96.
Arkansas Tech’s Rebecka Surtevall captured the individual crown as she finished at 16-over for the tournament, after putting up scores of 80-77-75. She edged out Harding’s Becca Godman (79-77-77) by one stroke.
ECU women’s tennis team rolls to weekend wins
ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — The East Central University women’s tennis team rolled to two Great American Conference road victories over the weekend, downing Ouachita Baptist 8-1 and Henderson State 9-0.
ECU’s only loss against OBU came at No. 2 doubles.
Marta Valles (No. 1 singles), Bernardita Muscillo (No. 2), Elisabeth Dignard (No. 3), Kristen Clubb (No. 5) and Aurelie Rodriguez (No. 6) rolled to straight set victories for the Lady Tigers while Agostina Moran (No. 4) won an extended 6-2, 7-6 (6) match.
Valles and Dignard combined for an 8-1 victory at No. 1 doubles while Rodriguez an Moran combined for an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles.
Against Henderson State, only seven actual matches were completed as ECU won at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles by default.
Valles (No. 1 singles), Muscillo (No. 2), Dignard (No. 3), Moran (No. 4) and Katelin Threet (No. 5) were straight-set winners.
Valles and Dignard combined for an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles and Rodriguez and Moran were victorious, 8-0, at No. 2 doubles.
