  • Ask Richard Dream kit for shooting news and sports action

Since my college days I have been fantasizing about photography equipment. My first Nikon camera, an FM, came with a fold-out poster featuring the more than 60 Nikkor lenses that would fit my new camera. I framed that poster and hung it on my dormitory room wall, and have had it ever since. That was in 1982, and since then, lens design and capability have changed considerably, though the function of lenses has remained the same, to focus light onto film or a digital sensor.

  • Restoring fiscal discipline

Washington, D.C., is not known as a beacon of honesty and candor.  So it’s almost shocking to see the House pass a budget bill as thoroughly straightforward and grounded in reality as the Sequester Replacement Reconciliation Act.

  • A graduate’s final test

Most parents are thrilled beyond measure when their child graduates from college. Graduation means their son or daughter has successfully navigated years of grueling study. Having gained another level of maturity and independence in the process, he or she is now prepared to face the world as a full-fledged adult.

  • Sen. Susan Paddack Water reuse tops senator's agenda

For the past several years, I have been working with local and state organizations, including municipal, county, and tribal governments on the issue of water in the 21st Century and beyond. It is one of the most complex issues before us but one thing we know for certain is there is no new water.  Whatever we have on the planet right now is all we will ever have. As increased populations and expanded commercial use of water continue to push demands, the crucial need for greater conservation efforts and new approaches to water use is abundantly clear.

  • May is month to celebrate roses and friends

I don’t believe I’ve ever seen so many roses of every imaginable color in bloom as I have  this year.  Of course, the scarlet climbing roses are always prolific, but this spring the yellow, the peach, pink and the white are present in a fragrant profusion. Both at my house at Byng,  in the fence rows, and at Baptist Village the rose bushes are bending with the weight of all those petals. Of course, the people who suffer from allergies will tell us quickly that they’re paying for that fragrance and color with a stuffy nose and frequent sneezes.

  • Who let the dogs out?

The other day as I was working on my column, there came a knock on the door. This surprised me as I hadn’t heard anyone pull up.  I looked out the front and saw a bright red Honda Pilot.  I was confused as I don’t know anyone who owns such a vehicle.  As I peered from the window above the computer that I keep in my office at home, I saw the shape of a man in the passenger seat, but I couldn’t make out who it was.

  • Divide and conquer

I went to The Hunger Games with my daughters.  Twice. I am also reading the book at their behest.  I must say that I enjoyed the movie and am enjoying the book very much.  The style of storytelling in the movie and the book  is so intimate it really draws the viewer/reader in. It very much engages the heart.

  • Cancer impacts lives of two community residents

I’ve sometimes wondered what we would do if our weather, instead of being something to complain about, behaved  with smooth perfection. Now we’re finding ourselves in possession of  nearly perfect spring weather.   We had a mild winter with no ice storms, and we’ve had the prettiest springs I can remember.  Admittedly, some days are a bit windy, but we’ve had numerous good rains, and lots of sunshine so one would have to have inherited a complaining nature to find fault with the weather.
