• Grief Share, a weekly video seminar grief support group, is available in Ada. There are 13 weekly sessions held every Thursday evening from 6:45-8:30 p.m. at Ada First Free Will Baptist Church, 421 South Ash,  in the Family Life Center. This support group is open to the entire Ada area and to any church affiliation. • New Lima alumni reunion evening social is from 6-11 p.m. at Wewoka Country Club located at the end of 7th Street next to the Gil Morgan Golf Course. Cost is $5 at the door. Refreshments and bar are available.

• Al Anon meets at 8 p.m. each Friday at St. Lukes Episcopal Church.

• East Central Oklahoma Blood Institute New Donor Center hours are 8 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. until noon Saturday. New hours went into effect July 23.

• New Lima alumni reunion’s “Roam the Hallways” social takes place from 9 a.m. until noon at New Lima High School. Doughnuts, coffee and juice are available. The annual business meeting takes place at 11 a.m. in the cafeteria. The annual banquet takes place from 7 p.m. until midnight at Seminole Masonic Lodge located at 1709 W. Highway 9 on the south side of the road. Cost is $20 at the door. Scholarship and Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be presented. For more information, phone Melinda Spears at 405-257-5771.

• A blood drive is from 10 a.m. unti 2 p.m. at Pontotoc Technology Center, 601 W. 32nd Street. The drive is sponsored by friends and family of Jennifer Campbell. • Today is the deadline to submit applications to Pontotoc Technology Center’s August Fire Academy class. The class starts Aug. 6 and applications must be in by July 30. Applications may be picked up from Pontotoc Tech Center Business and Industry Services (BIS) Department Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. and Friday from 7 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.  Contact the BIS Department at 580-310-2248 for more information.

• TOPS, Take Off Pounds Sensibly, a support weight loss group, meets at 8:30 a.m. each Monday at Irving Community Center, second floor. For more information, phone 580-399-6731.

AUG. 1 , 2012

• The Divorce/Bereavement Support Group meets each Wednesday at 7 p.m. at The Compassion Outreach Center, 1124 Cradduck Rd., Ada. The group offers support for those who have lost a loved one through divorce or death. For more information, phone Tom at 580-332-6506.

• A dance is conducted each Wednesday at Irving Community Center, 704 N. Oak, from 7:30-10 p.m. Cost is $6 per person and is open to all ages.

• NAMI (National Alliance for Mental Illness) meets the first Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. in the conference room next to the dining room at Valley View Regional Hospital.

AUG. 4, 2012

• Compassion Outreach Center is having a clothing give-away for all ages, children through adult. The give-away will be  from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at The Compassion Outreach Center, 1124 Cradduck Road, Ada. 

• The fourth annual back-to-school giveaway of free school supplies is 8-11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, at Pontotoc County Agri-plex. The event is sponsored by Legacy Church of Ada and Ada Merchants.

• Lost Cherokee of Arkansas and Missouri Headman Don Harnesss is holding a meeting at noon at Ada Public Library. This is a potluck dinner and an auction. Members are asked to take an item for both events —  baked goods, canned goods, home-grown vegetables, jelly, jam, towels, pies and cakes. All members are asked to attend.

• The Peach Town Opry, a music show and open mic night, is hosted at 7 p.m. the first Saturday of each month at Stratford American Legion Building located just north of the 4-way stop on US Highway 177 in Stratford. The show is free, open to the public and features contemporary country and gospel music. For more information, contact Carole at 320-4319.

• American Legion Post 72 presents Kids Day from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at Ada Walmart parking lot. Events include carnival games, prize drawings, DARE officer, story time, dunk tank, safety tips, face painting, fire truck, photos with motorcycles, moon bounce, crafts, gypsy queen, fossils and minerals, balloons, football toss, obstacle course and concessions. Proceeds go to Children’s Miracle Network and The American Legion Post 72 children and youth programs.

 

MONDAY

AUG. 6, 2012

• Byng School District Enrollment – Byng High School, Byng Junior High, Byng Elementary, Francis Elementary, and Homer Elementary will have enrollment on Aug. 6, 7 and 8 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Parents or guardians need to take  proof of residence such as a utility bill to the enrollment. School begins Aug. 15. For more information, contact the school principal or phone 580-310-6751. 

• Today is the cut off date to sign up for the 21st annual Ada Shrine Club Golf Scramble and Shootout skins game Aug. 11. The event begins with a two-man scramble at 8 a.m. Shotgun start at Jimmie Austin Golf Course, Seminole. Cost is $130 per team, which includes green fee, cart and hamburgers, hotdogs or hot link dinner. Mulligans are $5; A,B&C Flights (determined by adjusted team handicap); senior flight (both golfers must be 60 or older.) Skins game prizes. Total prize money equals $4,300. Proceeds benefit Ada Shrine Club Activity Fund. Cut-off date is Aug. 6 to sign up. There is a $25 penalty for late sign-up. To participate in the tournament, phone 580-421-2019 or 332-2465. • Ada Kiwanis Club meets each Monday at 12 noon in the Aldridge Ballroom, 12th and Broadway, for buffet lunch and a short program.

Kiwanis is a service club whose motto is “Young Children, Priority One.” Kiwanians serve the  community in ways that primarily benefit children, including the operation of the Kiwanis Ball Park and assisting with the Wintersmith Kiddie Park.
