Tourney to assist children

The Ada News

Ada —

Who knows if the surf’s up — this is Ada not San Francisco — but that’s not going to stop the volleyball fun on May 5.

And, it’s all for a great cause: The March of Dimes.

The local charitable group will host its first-ever three-member team volleyball tournament at the Ada Elks Lodge on Cinco De Mayo. All proceeds will benefit children who suffer from birth defects or maladies from premature birth, said Ron Batey. Batey, a Farmer’s Insurance agent, serves locally as an official with the March of Dimes.

Team members will be asked to pay $15 per player and substitutes. Sign in is at 9 a.m. and the first serve will happen at 10 a.m., he said.

“We’ve already had some great donations. Ada Pepsi is donating all water and soda for concessions and Hibbett Sports has donated discount coupons. First and second place trophies will be awarded.

“We really appreciate the Ada Elks Lodge making space available for us. It will be a fun weekend.

Batey said the East Central University women’s volleyball team will be competing and other groups have expressed an interest in playing.
