EDITOR’S NOTE: At the first of each year, we update the area briefs folder. If you wish to have your group’s event listed on a regular basis, please send the information to Brenda Tollett by email at btollett@theadanews.com, fax 580-332-8841 or deliver the information in person to 116 N. Broadway. Briefs must be submitted at least five days before the event by bringing them into the office, emailing to btollett@theadanews.com or faxing to (580) 332-8841. If your group is no longer meeting and is listed in the Area Briefs, please contact Brenda Tollett at 580-310-7520 to have the brief removed. Briefs will not be accepted over the telephone and are reserved for non-profit organizations. Church-related briefs are published only on Friday’s religion page. All activities may be subject to change due to weather conditions.

 

FRIDAY

MAY 4, 2012

•  Cross Cut Cowboy Church Coggins Clinic is 9 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 5, at Pontotoc County Agri-plex. Coggins cost is $20 per horse for five horses or $15 per horse for more than five horses. Other equine vaccinations can be ordered. Cost for rabies vaccination is $8 per horse and West Nile vaccination  is $25 per horse. Phone Jaclin Richey at 580-399-7343 to register. In conjunction with Arbuckle Equine Veterinary services Double M Farrier Service, farrier cost for full set is $50, front is $35 and trim is $20.

• “Swirls and Pearls for the Girls” takes place from 6-8 p.m. at Ada Elks Lodge. The event, hosted by Girl Scouts of Eastern Oklahoma as part of their Centennial Celebration, will feature wine tasting, hors d’oeuvres, sale of pearls and Girl Scout cookies, displays of vintage Girl Scout uniforms and the council’s current camping facilities, a video collage of former Girl Scouts reminiscing about their experiences, and an opportunity to join the Girl Scout alumnae group.   

• ACT II’s production of the musical Annie is 7 p.m. in  Dorothy I. Summers Theatre on the  East Central University campus. Tickets may be purchased at the ticket booth 30 minutes before curtain.  Prices are $8 for adults, $6 for students and senior citizens, $4 for children age 5 and under. • Al Anon meets at 8 p.m. each Friday at St. Lukes Episcopal Church. 

 

SATURDAY

MAY 5, 2012

• Team Vision yard sale to benefit Relay for Life takes place from 6:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Arlington Center, old Vision Bank location at the corner of Arlington and Country Club. The team will also be serving a hot dog lunch, beginning at 11 a.m. Cost is $5 for hot dog, chips and drink. Included in the sale is furniture, exercise equipment, baby itmes, clothing, home décor and lots of miscellaneous items including a car.

• City of Ada spring clean-up begins at 9 a.m. Volunteers are needed to pick up trash. All ages, groups and organizations are welcome to participate. Trash bags will be provided. • Stonewall is conducting a city-wide garage sale today beginning at 8 a.m. There will be many homes in town having sales, as well as some on the outskirts of town. 

• The Peach Town Opry, a music show and open mic night, is hosted at 7 p.m. the first Saturday of each month at Stratford American Legion Building located just north of the 4-way stop on US Highway 177 in Stratford. The show is free, open to the public and features contemporary country and gospel music. For more information, contact Carole at 320-4319.

• Rabies clinics will be held at Oil Center Fire Department from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.; Vanoss School from 11:15 a.m. to 12 p.m.; and at Roff Fire Department from 12:15 p.m. to 1 p.m. Cost is $8 per animal.

• Balancing food and play, fun, games and folly takes place from 2-3 p.m. at Harris Park in Hammond Heights. In case of rain, events will be moved to The Church of God in Christ at 3015 N. Townsend, Hammond Heights. This is a time of play for children and their families.

MAY 7, 2012

• TOPS, Take Off Pounds Sensibly, a support weight loss group, meets at 8:30 a.m. each Monday at Irving Community Center, second floor. For more information, phone 580-399-6731. 

•Veterans of Foreign Wars, Desert Storm Post 11194, holds its monthly meeting the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m. in the Music Room  located on the second floor of Ada Public Library. Anyone having an interest in the VFW, any veteran, and especially those who have earned a campaign medal through participation in combat are encouraged to attend. The Post also operates a Veterans Service Office at 701 N. Broadway in Ada.

MAY 8, 2012 

• A special meeting of the board of directors for Tri-County Indian Nations Community Development Corporation takes place at 10 a.m. at new Vision Bank conference room, 1901 Arlington. This meeting is open to the public. For more information, phone Amy Elliott at 580-310-9300.

• Rabies clinics will be held at Francis Fire Department from 4-6 p.m. Cost is $8 per animal. 

• Have you or someone you know suffered the unimaginable — the death of a child? The Compassionate Friends Ada Area Chapter (a non-profit organization) meets at 6:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month at First United Methodist Church, Parlor Room. For more information, phone (580) 399-5565. 

• Byrds Mill Archeological Society meets at 7 p.m. the second Tuesday of each month at Valley View Regional Hospital Conference Room.

• Al Anon meets at 8 p.m. each Tuesday at St. Lukes Episcopal Church.

 • American Legion Auxiliary Unit 72 meets at 6 p.m. in McKeel Room of Ada Public Library.

 

WEDNESDAY

MAY 9 , 2012

• The Divorce/Bereavement Support Group meets each Wednesday at 7 p.m. at The Compassion Outreach Center, 1124 Cradduck Rd., Ada. The group offers support for those who have lost a loved one through divorce or death. For more information, phone Tom at 580-332-6506.

• A dance is conducted each Wednesday at Irving Community Center, 704 N. Oak, from 7:30-10 p.m. Cost is $6 per person and is open to all ages.
