NOTEWORTHTY: Junior Justin Powell shot a career-low 70 and three other Ada golfers shot 75 or better as the Cougars finished second at the 2012 Class 4A Preview held Monday at the Lake Hefner North golf course. Heritage Hall, behind a sizzling 66 from tournament medalist Michael Helton, won the team title with a 283 while Ada followed at a season-best 292. Elk City was one stroke behind Ada at 293. Powell would finish sixth in the medalist race. Cole Townsend also played his best round of golf this spring, carding a 73 — good enough for ninth place. Wyatt Robson was next at 74 while Blake Long shot a season-low 75. Kyle Rodrigues rounded out the Cougars’ effort with a solid round of 80.
COACHES QUOTE: “We went out on a perfect day and played the best golf we have played all year. We could have knocked a few strokes off of our score, and maybe gotten down to around 287, but we could not have threatened Heritage Hall today. They proved today that they are the team to beat in Class 4A,” — Ada head coach Robbie Powell.
“Justin really played well today, very well. He shot under par for the first time in his high school career. It could have been much better, he had three or four putts role right over the edge. Cole played his best round as well, and we both felt like he got the most out of his round today. Blake Long came up with his best performance of the year, and I think it may have been his high school career low too. Wyatt was solid with a 74, but we both expected him to play better. He just had a really bad day with the putter — he hit it well enough to have put up a 70 or 71. Kyle got off to a really bad start, but held things together and shot 80. I was very proud of the performance the kids showed today. Hopefully we can continue with this momentum,” — Powell.
Up Next: At at Guthrie Bluejay Bash Thursday.
